Toto Schillaci, hero of Italia '90, dead at 66

Former Italy striker, who scored six goals at the 1990 World Cup, dies after long illness

Toto Schillaci, the striker who fired Italy to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup on home soil, has died at the age of 66.

Schillaci, nicknamed Totò le cobra, was a key figure in one of the most iconic Azzurri sides of the past 40 years

He spent most of his career at Messina and Juventus but it was during his time at the World Cup in 1990 that he truly made his name, scoring six goals in seven games as Arrigo Sacchi's side reached the last four, losing on penalties to Argentina.

He scored a memorable brace against Austria and also netted in the memorable 2-0 victory over reigning champions Argentina, the only goal Diego Maradona conceded during the tournament.

Schillaci, who won 16 caps for Italy and scored seven international goals, passed away on Monday following a long illness

Juventus tweeted: "Ciao Totò, the unforgettable protagonist of Italia '90. Your goals, your passion, your joy will always be with us. RIP Legend."
