Emily Petricola Defends Title as Australians Shine in Paris Velodrome

Para cyclist reclaims rainbow jersey to end successful track world championships for Australia.

Petricola's victory highlights Australia's dominance in para-cycling.

Australian para-cyclist Emily Petricola successfully defended her women's C4 500-meter time trial title at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Paris on Thursday, October 13, 2022.

The 33-year-old Petricola, who has cerebral palsy, clocked 35.343 seconds to finish ahead of Great Britain's Crystal Lane (35.938) and Poland's Karolina Garnczarek (36.276).

Petricola's victory was one of two gold medals for Australia on the penultimate day of the championships, as Paige Greco won the women's individual pursuit, after qualifying fastest in the morning session.

Australia also won silver in the women's team pursuit and men's team sprint, and bronze in the women's team sprint and men's individual pursuit, for a total of 6 medals in the Track World Championships.

Petricola, originally from Perth, is a two-time Paralympic champion and has won five world titles in her career.

"I'm really happy with my performance today," Petricola said. "I've been working hard all year, and it's great to see it pay off. I'm proud to represent Australia and to be a role model for other people with disabilities."

Petricola's success is further proof of the strength of Australia's para-cycling program.

Australia has been a powerhouse in para-cycling for many years, and the team's success at the Track World Championships is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the athletes and coaches.

Australia's Success in Para-Cycling

  • Australia has won more medals than any other country at the Paralympic Games in para-cycling.
  • Australia has won the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships four times in the past six years.
  • Australia has a strong development program for para-cyclists, which has helped to produce a number of world-class athletes.

Petricola's victory is an inspiration to all Australians, and it is a reminder that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
