Dan Hurley Backtracks on NBA Coaching Pursuit After Turning Down Lakers

Hurley Rebuffs Lakers

Dan Hurley, head coach of the UConn Huskies men's basketball team, has pulled out of consideration for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching position.

Hurley had initially been considered a top candidate for the job after leading UConn to a Big East regular-season championship and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament this past season.

Hurley's Commitment to UConn

However, Hurley has now decided to remain at UConn, citing his commitment to the program and his desire to build on the success they have achieved in recent years.

In addition to the Big East title, UConn (23-10) advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 this past season.

Hurley's Statement

"I am committed to UConn and our players," Hurley said in a statement. "I believe we have something special here, and I’m excited about the future of this program."

Hurley added that he appreciates the interest from the Lakers, but he "ultimately decided that UConn is where I belong."

Lakers Coaching Search Continues

The Lakers are now expected to continue their search for a new head coach. Other candidates who have been linked to the job include Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Charles Lee, Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson, and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts.

The Lakers are coming off a disappointing season in which they finished 33-49 and missed the playoffs.

The Lakers are looking for a coach who can help them return to contention in the Western Conference and challenge for an NBA championship.
