Mount Etna Erupts: New Video Captures Dramatic Lava Flow

Europe's Tallest Volcano Spews Lava Into the Night Sky

Mount Etna, Europe's tallest and most active volcano, has erupted again, sending rivers of molten lava flowing down its slopes.

The eruption began around midnight on Sunday, May 22, and has continued into Monday, May 23. Lava fountains have been observed shooting up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) into the air, and ash plumes have reached heights of up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet).

Increased Volcanic Activity

According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the eruption is part of an ongoing period of increased volcanic activity at Mount Etna.

Over the past few months, the volcano has been experiencing a series of smaller eruptions and tremors. Scientists believe that these events are a sign that the volcano is entering a new phase of activity.

Lava Flow Threatens Nearby Towns

The lava flows from the current eruption are posing a threat to nearby towns and villages. One lava flow is heading towards the town of Zafferana Etnea, while another is moving towards the town of Nicolosi.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of several thousand people from the affected areas. No injuries have been reported so far, but the lava flows are causing significant damage to infrastructure and property.

Dramatic Video Captures Eruption

New video footage captured by local residents shows the dramatic power of the eruption. The footage shows lava fountains shooting into the night sky, and rivers of molten lava flowing down the volcano's slopes.

The footage is a reminder of the immense power of nature and the potential for volcanic eruptions to cause widespread damage.
